Common Forefront Problems

COMMON FOREFOOT PROBLEMS

BUNIONS

(Hallux Valgus)

A ”bunion” is a deformity which occurs where the base of the big toe joins the first metatarsal bone. The joint is prominent and the forefoot becomes broader at this point.

Causes include foot type, hereditary factors, certain types of arthritis, injury and footwear.

Management includes  footwear advice, orthotics for certain foot types and surgery.

OSTEOARTHRITIS

OF THE BIG TOE

(Hallux rigidus)

Hallux rigidus is a deformity which occurs where the base of the big toe joins the first metatarsal bone. Due to osteoarthritis the joint becomes prominent and enlarged on the upper surface of the foot.

Management  includes footwear advice, orthotics and surgery.

Hallux Valgus and Hallux Rigidus can occur together.

LESSER TOE DEFORMITES

The lesser toes may become bent and deformed. This will lead to increased pressure on the toe joints and/or the ends of the toes causing soreness, corns and/or callus.

Lesser toe deformities include hammer, claw and mallet toes.

Contributing factors include Bunions, injury, footwear, a high arched (Cavus) type foot.

Management includes footwear advice, custom made toe props, orthotics, exercises and surgery.

MORTONS NEUROMA

Morton’s neuroma is a painful condition that can affect the ball of the foot. It may occur when a nerve is compressed between two metatarsal bones (usually the third and fourth metatarsals)

Causes include inadequate footwear. Shoes which are narrow in the forefoot area or high heeled shoes may contribute to the condition.

Treatments include footwear advice, orthotics, exercises and surgery.
