COMMON HEEL PROBLEMS

PLANTAR FASCIITIS

Plantar Fasciitis is a condition which is often seen in the clinic. It is an inflammation of the “plantar fascia”. The plantar fascia are tissues on the sole of the foot which run from the heel to the ball of the foot. Pain is usually felt in the heel area, especially after periods of inactivity - such as first thing in the morning when weight is initially placed on the foot. Pain may also occur after long periods of standing or walking.

Causes can include foot type (over pronation, over supination), overweight individuals, people who are on their feet a lot.

Treatment includes footwear advice, exercises, use of cold, strapping and orthotics.

ACHILLES TENDONITIS

Achilles tendonitis is a common condition that occurs where the large tendon that runs down the back of the lower leg becomes irritated and inflamed. This Achilles tendon connects the calf muscles to the heel bone.

Causes include overuse, tight calf muscles or other biomechanical problems.

Treatment includes footwear advice, exercises, use of cold, strapping and orthotics.

ORTHOTICS AND INSOLES

Specialist orthotics and insoles can be prescribed by the podiatrist to improve foot function and posture when walking. These can be either “off the shelf” or custom made
